A Study on the Effect of Antenatal Education about the Normal Course of Labor on Pain and Duration of Labor


Abstract
The study was designed to measure the effect of antenal education about the normal course of labor on pain and duration of labor.
The suo3ects of this study consisted of 80 pregnant women. 40 women who agreed to participate in an educational program were designated the experimental group. The rest become a comparison group.
The data were collected from July 10 to August 26, 1990, through questionnaire and observation during the intrapartal period. The instrument used for this study were Melzack¢¥s Pain Intensity Scale and McLachlan¢¥s pain Expression Inventory. The Confidence verification of this instrument was computed and the Cronbach & was 0.90.
Data were analyzed X2-test and t-test on 5% significant level with spss program. The results of study were summarized as follow
1) There was a statistically significant difference in the duration of the second stage of labor between the two groups. For women in the experimental group, the second stage of labor was 0.288 hours shorter than that of control group.
2) There was a significant difference in the women¢¥s perception score of pain between the two groups, in the active stage, transitional stage and the second stage. The control group¢¥s score was lower than that of control group.
In conclusion, the effect of antenatal education on pain and duration of labor was helpful in enhancing the quality of the birth experience for the subjects.
Therefore Nurses as educators should develop programs for antenatal education.
